Wood
95% of the wood used to make the handles comes from sustainably managed French forests. There is no excessive deforestation and no air pollution during long transport – all of this means less strain on nature. The main wood supplier has its forests in the French Jura region and is of course PEFC certified. The ebony wood comes from partners in Africa with RBUE certification.
Handle
Ebony is a rare and luxurious wood originating from African forests. Due to its beautiful density and deep black color, ebony is traditionally used for inlays. To achieve a velvety appearance, a specific wax is applied by hand to each handle.
Safety first
OPIFLEX® revolutionized the use of pocket knives. This new safety mechanism holds the blade in place without the need to lock it, making use very intuitive and simple. The knife is easy and secure to hold.
Stainless steel
The choice of blade steel is very important, as it is one of the defining materials of the knife itself. It determines the durability and quality of the blade itself. For these Opinel knives, stainless martensitic steel of European origin with a hardness of 55-57 HRC was chosen. The blade of these knives offers excellent sharpness and high wear resistance, which allows it to withstand regular contact with hard materials, such as ceramics, without the need for re-sharpening. Unlike carbon steel, stainless steel has the advantage that it does not require any special maintenance under normal conditions of use. However, it can reach its limits, especially in case of prolonged contact with aggressive environments (acid, salt water, aggressive detergents).
Opinel - a design icon
The story of the now iconic Opinel brand begins in the 19th century, when merchant Victor-Amédée Opinel learned to forge nails during his travels and subsequently founded his forge in France. After his death, his son Daniel took over the craft, becoming the "sharps maker" for local farmers because the blades of his sickles and scythes were widely acclaimed as the sharpest possible. However, the real Opinel - the folding pocket knife - had to wait a while for its discovery. Daniel Opinel's eldest son, Joseph, decided to follow in his father's footsteps and, driven by artistic passion, combined handcrafting with the most modern technology at the time and created a small miracle. The year was 1890 and the Opinel folding pocket knife saw the light of day, a knife loved from day one and passed down from generation to generation. The knife, which over the years has gained hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, has become a common part of many households and, in a way, one of the symbols of all of France...
Nowadays, the company produces not only legendary folding outdoor knives, but also has a sophisticated kitchen program, including forged kitchen knives; today you can also buy stainless steel cutlery and steak knives from the Opinel brand.
